1998 DECEMBER
Autism and Learning Disabilities (Kulachi Hansraj Model School) (New Delhi)

The series of lectures were part of the on going training programme conducted by the Institution December ‘98 Positive Behavioural Support (Okhla Institute)

The participants of Bridge Course were given an intensive one day training focusing on their cases in Behaviour Management. One teacher of 16 years experience put it succintly " When we present the cases I wonder if it is the same case; all along we have been focusing on the deficits of the children, wheres now the emphasis is on the strengths."

Home Based training for parents
Children have been assessed at home and suitable placements found for them depending on the individual cases. Parents have been trained at home to remodel or rearrange the environment in a cost-effective manner. Teachers at creches, day care centers and integrated nursery schools have been given input on how best to handle the children. Usually a three month programme is given for the teachers to implement.

  NOVEMBER

Bridge Course (Okhla Institute for Mental Retardation) (New Delhi)
The training is mandatory under the Rehabilitation Council of India Act (1992) for field workers and rehabilitation professionals who have no training but have been working with children with special needs since 1990. The course (75 hours) focused on all aspects of Special Education in a lecture cum participatory mode. The trainees were trained on site.

  OCTOBER

Autism workshop (ASTHA) (New Delhi)
The Institution works with children in the rural area at Tuglakabad. Two day on the site training was given on the nature and needs of autism. Though 3 days were planned initially, lack of time forced us to restrict the programme.

The staff felt that they could intake a few children with autism instead of referring them to other institutions; which had a very long waiting period.

Behavioural Support (New Delhi)
The core audience was the same that attended the earlier workshops. In addition teachers from regular schools, who had a few high functioning students with Asperger’s Syndrome, attended the workshop. The workshop covered the basic tenets of behavioural principles, and the historical perspective of Behaviour Mangement. PBS is a practical training programme for supporting the individual with challenging behaviours. However the cases were restricted to those with autism. Participants were " walked through" the various steps in securing community support, and creating a support network for the clients.

  SEPTEMBER
  Socio Communicative Behaviour (New Delhi)
The focus audience consisted mostly of the same group, in addition speech therapists also participated. Parents felt that this workshop was very much to their level and had greater applicability, especially those children who talked but did not communicate. Speech therapists wanted a much more intensive training suited to their clinical work, which covered a wider range of language disorders.
  AUGUST
Play Based Assessement ( New Delhi )
Participants included parents, psychologists, special educators, pediatrician, professionals in leadership positions, occupational therapists and social workers. The focus was on the problems faced by early childhood caregivers, and the strategies to overcome those hurdles.

Parents felt there was information overload. But the professionals, especially the teachers have given feed back that they were greatly empowered in their professional work
